“O Prophet, tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to bring down over themselves [part] of their outer garments. That is more suitable that they will be known and not be abused. And ever is Allah Forgiving and Merciful.” (Qur’an 33:59) Harassment is a serious issue, and we see it prevail everyday around us.

In the streets, offices and institutions. Islam has always protected the women against any sort of harassment.  24:30:  ”Tell the believing men that they should reduce/lower (يغضوا) their gaze/vision and guard their private parts…”  24:31:  ”Tell the believing women that they should reduce/lower (يغضضن) their gaze/vision and guard their private parts…”

So both the men and women are protected in Islam and the form of harassment that involves ogling and staring is prohibited in Islam. Our Lord states in Surat al Hujurat (The Chapter of the Rooms, Qur’an 49), we are nothing but brothers and sisters to each other. We should advise each other towards good, but do it with a sound understanding of the legal basis of what we are calling to, as well as a sound understanding of the manners that befit our message.
